Catherine labarre

A little more about Catherine LaBarre:

"I approach creation through colors. They make me vibrate and feed me with emotions. They remind me of my humanity.
My craving for colors motivate me to create.
The chromatic exploration begins. Spontaneous and raw. Emotions emerge.

Strokes, stamps, textures, washes and scratches. Numerous layers build up on the canvas. The creation process spreads in time.
Layers of influences also build on the canvas.
Life, cells, the ocean, the cosmos, the egg, the human body. I am interested in the concept of "systems." A set of connected parts within a complex whole. Some areas of my work highlight individual units that are part of a whole. Because of this, repetition and patterns frequently take shape in my work.
I like to question our perceptions using the concept of immensity merging into the microscopic, making the scales disappear, which makes some observers feel small, others immense."

Catherine is a teaching artist for Oak Street Studios and Side X Side. She also collaborates with Shoestring Theater. To view more of Catherine's work, visit her website.
